James Doohan and D-Day

James Doohan 1920 - 2005

James Doohan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Doohan), better known as "Scottie" on Star Trek, was a Canadian soldier in World War II who landed  on Juno beach on June 6, 1944.  He was commissioned a lieutenant in the 13th Field Artillery Regiment of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division.  After training in England from 1940 until 1944, Doohan participated in the D-Day landings.  On June 6 he saw action shooting two German snipers.  Later that night, he was shot himself 6 times in a friendly fire incident by a skittish Canadian sentry.  He was hit four times in the leg, once in the chest (deflected by a cigarette case) and one bullet hit his right middle which was later amputated.

Doohan had, therefore, a built-in advantage in making the Vulcan salute long before anyone had heard of Star Trek.

Commander Kelly says, "Happy Belated Canada Day, Happy Fourth of July and thanks to all vets and all those serving the cause of freedom around the world!"

Live Long and Prosper!
